The Idea of North is a world class a cappella quintet, who are serious about their music without taking themselves too seriously. Now with the incredible Kai Kitamura on vocal percussion, Australia's most highly-awarded and best-loved contemporary a cappella group perform with a distinct sound and style that crosses many musical genres including jazz, folk, gospel, pop, classical and comedy.
For the first time, City Recital Hall will be presenting a full length performance in which the group will explore vocal harmony throughout the centuries. Think Gregorian Chant, Bach, Madrigals and the Andrew Sisters and topped off with some contemporary harmony-laden classics.
But first, discard your preconceptions of what you may experience in this deep dive into the history of vocal harmony. The Idea of North have finely-tuned their good old-fashioned self-deprecating Australian charm and will lure you into learning about five centuries of vocal music without you even noticing. Delve into the golden era of the Baroque, stroll through the age of enlightenment, sway across the velvety jazz era and bop along to the more recent era of pop and rock—but none of it is as you have ever heard before!
With copious amounts of “wit, charm and breath-taking musical virtuosity” (The Adelaide Advertiser), The Idea of North will demonstrate their “impeccable standard of musicianship” (The Melbourne Age) in this one night only of vocal harmony histrionics—a musical experience you’ll remember for years.
