On the big screen back in 1998, Shakespeare in Love won seven Academy Awards and stole our hearts. Now, you can relive this delightful romantic comedy romp, featuring William Shakespeare himself as the leading man, in an enchanting on stage adaption in a South Australian premiere, presented by Adelaide’s own, Independent Theatre.

Struggling young playwright, Will Shakespeare, is tormented by writer’s block. That is, until he finds his muse in the beautiful Viola de Lesseps, who secretly wishes to be an actor. Their forbidden love becomes a complex web of entanglements and deception, ultimately inspiring Will to pen the greatest love story of all time.

The star-studded, award-winning cast of the cinematic Shakespeare in Love featured Joseph Fiennes, Gwyneth Paltrow, Dame Judi Dench, Colin Firth, and Ben Affleck. It took the world by storm, earning Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard the Oscar for Best Screenplay as well as being named best picture at the 1998 Golden Globes, British Awards, and the Academy Awards.

In 2014, Lee Hall, author of Billy Elliot the Musical, skilfully adapted the screenplay into an instant stage sensation in London where it was acclaimed as a joyful “love letter to theatre”.

Don’t miss this hilarious romantic tale of mistaken identity, innuendo and wordplay.

Independent Theatre’s Shakespeare in Love opens on Friday, 24 November and runs to Saturday, 2 December at Star Theatre in Adelaide.

Tickets are available via the Independent Theatre website.
